Dominated by thunderous glaciers, vast forests, wild rivers, island-dotted seas and fjords, Alaska is undoubtedly one of American’s most scenic and beautiful states. The magnificence of the land, wildlife, unmatched range of outdoor activities and adventure, the chance to explore some Russian and Native American heritage, together are the draw that brings visitors to Alaska
It’s the largest state; the size of California, Montana and Texas combined. It’s detached from the rest of the US by Canada’s Yukon Territory and British Columbia.
Alaska is blessed with astonishing scenery. Denali National Park, roughly at its heart, is home to the 20,320ft behemoth of Mount McKinley – North America’s highest peak – as well as a wealth of wildlife (such as grizzly and black bears). Glacier Bay National Park, on the Gulf of Alaska, is a magnificent enclave where ancient rivers of ice inch forward. Gates Of The Arctic National Park, in the north of the state, is pure wilderness – so far off the beaten path that there are no established roads or trails. A zone for the intrepid.
Beyond the mountains, Alaska does city life. Juneau, the state capital, is home to the fascinating Alaska State Museum, as well as the nearby vast Mendenhall Glacier. Anchorage, the largest city, is a cosmopolitan port that contains the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. Fairbanks is a fabulous spot for seeing the incredible Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis.
Alaska offers an incredible variety of outdoor activities, including whitewater rafting and wildlife viewing in the summer. Skiing and dogsledding in the winter.
